History

Adamstown was established around 1840 when the railroad was built. The town was named for Adam Kohlenburg who was a station agent as well as a local businessman in the community.  At different points in its history Adamstown was known as “Adamstown Junction” and “Adamsville.” In 1864 a civil war skirmish was fought here and the nearby Cooling Springs Farm was part of the underground railroad.  In 1885, the school was built and in 1919 the Adamstown Bank opened.  As of 1921, Adamstown had many amenities including grain elevators, a blacksmith shop, a carriage works, two garages, a general store, hardware store and the bank.  Today the general store still operates, the bank has been converted to into a local deli and the original school operates as the Carroll Manor Grange. The town also features a post office, a large park as well as a community pavilion, which is owned and rented out by the Carroll Manor Fire department for community and private events.

In 2004 the Carrollton Manor Volunteer Coalition was created with the intent on unifying the community as a whole to address local issues.  It was through the efforts of this coalition in 2006 that Eastalco donated almost 27 acres to be used for a proposed active recreation park.  The park is now in the hands of Carroll Manor Recreation Council and they are in the process of bringing the dreams of this complex into reality.  The future complex will house multipurpose fields to be used for baseball, soccer and other sports.

Adamstown is a unique community where the old and new elements have blended together beautifully.  As the new development of Greenhill Manor began, so did the gentrification effort in the older portion of the town.  Now many of the older homes have been restored or renovated to include amenities of the 21st century, but with all the charm of centuries past.  This blending of old and new styles continues today with homes within the new community of Adamstown Commons where there is a mix of home styles, many of which are Neo-Traditional and as such are in keeping with the feel of “Old Adamstown.”  Whether you desire an old or a new home, this Adamstown has much to
offer.
